RESEARCH
Laser Eye Surgery of Erie has been involved with Clinical Research Trials since 2005. Dr. Haverly is the Principle Investigator involved with Phase II through Phase IV research. We have participated in five Phase II studies, one Phase III study, and two Phase IV studies.
Phase II: Designed to assess the efficacy of a drug or device and can involve up to several hundred patients. This phase usually involves a placebo which is an inactive substance used as a control in a clinical trial to determine the effectiveness of the medical drug.
Phase III: Designed to create a more thorough understanding of the effectiveness of a drug or device and can involve several hundred to several thousand patients. Once a drug or device has survived this phase of testing, an FDA approval can be requested by a pharmaceutical company.
Phase IV: Clinical trials conducted after a drug or device has an FDA approval. The goals of these trials fall into several categories:
- Comparison of the drug to other similar drugs.
- Monitor long-term effectiveness and impact on the patient's quality of life.
- To further assess the cost effectiveness of the new drug or device.
Laser Eye Surgery of Erie is a national research center to help treat and cure diseases of the eye.
Glaucoma Studies
Dr. Haverly is a clinical investigator for several clinical research studies. Currently, there are studies available for glaucoma patients. These studies are designed to better help understand glaucoma and the effects certain eye drops have on the eye. The ultimate goal is to try to improve the treatment of glaucoma with the least side effects. We can all hope there will be a cure for glaucoma but until that time, research needs to be continued.
"The laser corrective surgery is probably one of the best decisions I have made in my lifetime. I wore glasses for 34 years, and it is truly a blessing not to wear them anymore. The procedure is short and virtually painless. As a person who has had this done I would recommend laser surgery to anyone who is a candidate and who can afford it. Dr. Haverly's staff was very, very professional and courteous. It is truly a miracle. Thank you."
Mark Jordanm, Coordinator, age 39
"I had laser refractive surgery because I did not want to bother with contacts. I like being able to see clearly when I wake up in the morning and not have to fumble around for glasses. It's wonderful being able to see objects in the distance without aid. I highly recommend Laser Eye Surgery of Erie. The surgery was quick and painless. Dr. Haverly, Dr. Gellis, and the office staff have been wonderful through this experience."
